Why won't my Lovable project publish?
Last checked 31 Aug 2026
Short answer
Publishing usually fails because of a build error, an unresolved dependency, or a backend function that errors at build time — check the build log Lovable shows and fix that specific error first.
Read the actual error
When Publish fails, Lovable shows a build log. Don't guess — read the specific error line. Common categories:
- Type errors or broken imports introduced by a recent change.
- Missing environment/secret values a server function needs at build or runtime.
- A dependency that doesn't resolve, often after removing or renaming a package.
- An edge/server function failing during the build's verification step.
Steps to fix
- Copy the exact error from the build log.
- Ask Lovable to fix only that error, quoting it directly:
Publish is failing with this error: [paste error]. Find the root cause and make the smallest fix, then try publishing again.
- Re-run Publish after each fix — don't stack multiple speculative fixes before retrying.
- If the last few versions built fine, compare with Version history to see what changed just before it broke.
What usually goes wrong
- Vague prompts like "why won't it publish" without pasting the error waste a round trip — always include the exact message.
- Secrets added to front-end code instead of server functions will pass locally in Preview but fail a stricter build check — secrets must live server-side.
- Large, unrelated changes bundled into one prompt make it hard for Lovable (or you) to isolate what broke the build; ask for the smallest possible fix.
- If a custom domain is attached, a publish failure will also show as domain downtime — fix the build first.
When to get help
If the build log points at custom backend code you don't understand (a hand-written edge function, a complex migration), it's reasonable to bring in PromptSites.com rather than trial-and-error your way through it.
