How do I fix a Lovable build error?

Last checked 31 Aug 2026

Short answer

Read the exact error message and file it points to, paste it back to Lovable, and let it fix that specific error rather than describing the symptom vaguely.

Diagnostic sequence

  1. Find the exact error — Lovable typically shows a build error banner or it appears in the chat response after a failed change.
  2. Note the error type: TypeScript type error, missing import, syntax error, failed dependency, or a backend/edge function build failure.
  3. Check if it's isolated to one file/component or breaks the whole build.
  4. If it's a backend function, check Logs for the actual runtime error, since build success doesn't guarantee the function runs correctly.

What usually goes wrong

  • Copy-pasting only "there's a build error" without the actual message — Lovable then has to search blind.
  • Multiple unrelated errors reported at once, making it hard to tell which one is the root cause versus a knock-on effect.
  • A manual edit made in the Code editor conflicting with what chat-driven changes expect.

How to fix it

There's a build error: [paste the full error text and file name]. Fix this specific error without changing unrelated code.

Being explicit about "don't touch unrelated code" matters — a broad fix request can introduce new changes elsewhere, especially in a codebase that's grown large.

If Lovable can't fix it after a couple of attempts

  • Try rephrasing with more context: what you were trying to do when the error appeared, and what changed just before it.
  • Use Plan mode to have Lovable investigate the root cause before making changes, rather than repeatedly patching.
  • If it's stuck in a loop, revert via Version history to the last version that built successfully and reapply the change differently.
