Why are environment variables missing?

Last checked 31 Aug 2026

Short answer

Environment variables/secrets are usually missing because they were set for one environment (preview) but not another (production), never entered at all, or referenced with the wrong name in code. Ask Lovable to check what's configured rather than guessing.

Common reasons

  • Never set — the app's code expects a variable or secret that was never actually added.
  • Set in the wrong place/environment — added for local development or preview but not carried through to the published app, or vice versa.
  • Typo in the variable name — the code references STRIPE_KEY but the secret was saved as STRIPE_API_KEY, for example.
  • Client vs. server confusion — a secret meant to be used server-side (in an edge/server function) was expected to be readable from front-end code, where secrets should never live anyway.
  • Rotated or expired key — a secret was regenerated at the provider (Stripe, Resend, etc.) but not updated in Lovable.

Diagnostic sequence

  1. Identify exactly which variable/secret is reported missing — check the console or function logs for the specific name.
  2. Ask Lovable to confirm whether that secret is currently configured for this project (it can check without exposing the value).
  3. Confirm the variable name in code matches exactly what was configured, including case.
  4. If it's meant to be used in a server/edge function, confirm the code reads it there and not from client-side code.
  5. If it was recently rotated at the provider, get the new value and ask Lovable to update it.

What usually goes wrong

  • Assuming an environment variable set once applies everywhere, when preview and production can need it set separately.
  • Putting an API key directly in front-end code "to test quickly" — this both exposes the secret and doesn't match how the code should read it in production.

Fixing it

The app says [variable name] is missing. Check whether it's currently configured, and tell me exactly what value/format it needs so I can provide it.

Because Lovable Cloud manages secrets without a separate dashboard, always ask Lovable to check and set these rather than looking for a Supabase dashboard yourself.
