Why am I getting a 403 error?

Short answer
A 403 means the request was understood but denied — almost always a permissions or Row-Level Security issue rather than a bug in the request itself. Check who's making the request and what policy should allow it.
What 403 means
403 Forbidden means the server recognised the request but refused it based on permissions — different from 404 (not found) or 401 (not authenticated). In a Lovable Cloud/Supabase-backed app, this is almost always a Row-Level Security (RLS) policy, storage bucket policy, or API key scope blocking the action.
Diagnostic sequence
- Check the Logs to see exactly which request returned the 403 and which table/bucket/function it hit.
- Confirm whether the user making the request is logged in and what role they have (check the
user_rolestable, not a column on their profile). - Review the RLS policy on the relevant table — does it explicitly allow this operation (select/insert/update/delete) for this role?
- If it's a storage upload/download, check the storage bucket's access policy separately from table RLS.
- If it's a third-party API (Stripe, Google, etc.), check whether the API key has the right scopes/permissions for that action.
What usually goes wrong
- A table has RLS enabled (the secure default) but no policy was written for the action being attempted — this denies everyone, including the resource owner.
- A policy checks the wrong column (e.g. comparing against
idinstead ofuser_id). - The user's role was never actually written to
user_rolesafter signup. - A secret/API key used server-side has been revoked or has insufficient permissions.
Fixing it
I'm getting a 403 error when [action, e.g. "uploading a file" or "updating a row in orders"]. Check the RLS policy or storage policy involved and confirm it allows this for [role/condition].
Because Lovable Cloud users don't have direct dashboard access, ask Lovable to inspect and fix the policy rather than looking for it yourself — see /questions/why-does-my-app-work-for-me-but-not-other-users for the related role-based case.
