How do I build an admin dashboard?

Last checked 31 Aug 2026

Short answer

Ask Lovable to build a role-gated route that lists and manages your data (users, orders, content), backed by RLS policies that only let accounts with the `admin` role query the underlying tables.

What an admin dashboard needs

An admin dashboard is really three things working together: a protected route, role checks, and read/write access to tables normal users can't touch.

  1. Roles first. Set up user_roles and an admin role before building the dashboard (see how-do-i-create-different-user-roles).
  2. Route guard. The /admin route should check both "is logged in" and "has admin role", redirecting non-admins away.
  3. Data access. RLS policies on tables like orders or profiles should allow admins to read/update all rows, while regular users only see their own.

Building it

Build an admin dashboard at /admin that's only visible to users with the admin role. It should list all users and let me change their role, and show a table of recent orders.

Ask Lovable this in one go, or iteratively:

  1. Add the role check and route guard.
  2. Add a users table view with role-editing controls.
  3. Add whatever business data (orders, submissions, content) the dashboard needs to manage.

What usually goes wrong

  • The dashboard UI is hidden from non-admins, but the API/tables it queries aren't restricted, so the data is still fetchable directly.
  • Giving the dashboard "select *" access to a users table that includes emails or other data you shouldn't expose broadly — scope columns deliberately.
  • No audit trail: if admins can edit sensitive data, consider asking Lovable to log who changed what and when.

For genuinely complex admin tooling (bulk actions, analytics, multi-role workflows), PromptSites.com can build it properly rather than iterating prompt by prompt.
