When should I use Lovable Cloud?

Last checked 31 Aug 2026

Short answer

Use Lovable Cloud for most new projects needing a backend — it's the fastest path with no separate account; connect your own Supabase project instead if you already have one, need direct dashboard access, or must integrate with existing Supabase infrastructure.

Default to Lovable Cloud unless you have a reason not to

For the majority of projects — contact forms, user accounts, simple databases, file uploads — Lovable Cloud is the quicker option. There's no account to set up separately, and Lovable handles provisioning, migrations and secrets for you.

Set up Lovable Cloud and add authentication and a posts table for a blog.

When your own Supabase project makes more sense

  • You already have a Supabase project with existing data, users or infrastructure you need to keep using.
  • You need direct Supabase dashboard access — for advanced configuration, direct SQL access outside of chat, or integrations that assume dashboard-level control.
  • Your organisation has compliance or infrastructure requirements that mandate managing your own Supabase instance and billing.
  • You're migrating an existing app into Lovable that was already built on Supabase.

Connecting your own project is covered in how do I connect Supabase to Lovable.

What's the same either way

Whichever you choose, the underlying platform is Postgres with the same core features: database, auth, storage, edge functions. Row-level security rules and the user_roles table pattern apply identically in both cases.

What usually goes wrong

  • Starting with your own Supabase project "just in case": this adds setup overhead (a separate account, separate billing) for no benefit if you don't actually need dashboard access — most people are better off starting with Cloud and migrating later if needed.
  • Switching mid-project without a plan: moving from Cloud to your own Supabase project (or vice versa) involves migrating data and reconnecting — treat it as a deliberate step, not a casual toggle.
  • Assuming Cloud has feature gaps: Cloud and a connected Supabase project offer the same Postgres/auth/storage/functions capabilities — the difference is account/dashboard ownership, not feature depth.

If you're unsure which applies to your situation, describe your existing setup to Lovable in chat and ask which option it recommends before building further.
