How do I test authentication properly?
Last checked 31 Aug 2026
Short answer
Test with real, separate accounts in a private browser window for each role (signed-out, normal user, admin), checking both the UI and that the underlying API/RLS actually blocks what it should — not just what the interface shows.
Why "it looks fine" isn't enough
A page can appear correctly restricted while the underlying data is still fetchable by anyone with the right request. Proper testing checks both layers.
A practical checklist
- Fresh sessions: use a private/incognito window per test so old cookies or cached sessions don't hide bugs.
- Signed-out: confirm protected pages redirect, and that calling the app's data endpoints directly (not through the UI) is refused.
- Normal user: confirm they see only their own data, can't reach
/admin, and can't edit someone else's profile by changing an ID in a request. - Admin/other roles: confirm elevated accounts see the right extra pages and data, and nothing more than intended.
- Edge cases: expired sessions, password reset, email verification links, logging in on a second device.
Create a test checklist for my auth setup: verify signed-out users can't reach protected data, normal users can't access admin routes or other users' data, and admins can access everything they should.
What usually goes wrong
- Testing only in one already-logged-in browser tab, which hides redirect and guard bugs.
- Trusting that a hidden UI element means the data is protected — RLS is what actually protects it, not
display: none. - Not testing the "in-between" loading state, which is often where redirect loops appear (see why-does-my-app-keep-redirecting-to-login).
Ask Lovable to help
Lovable can review your RLS policies and route guards on request: "Review my authentication setup and tell me if any table is missing row-level security."

- AnswerWhy does my app keep redirecting to login? This is almost always a session or route-guard bug: either the auth session isn't persisting, or a protected route checks auth state before it's loaded, so it bounces back to login even when signed in.
