How do I let users edit their profiles?

Last checked 31 Aug 2026

Short answer

Add a profile form bound to a `profiles` table row keyed by the user's ID, with an RLS policy that only lets each user update their own row, not anyone else's.

The pattern

Most Lovable apps with auth already have (or need) a profiles table with one row per user, linked by user_id. Editing a profile means:

  1. A form pre-filled from the current user's row.
  2. An update call scoped to auth.uid().
  3. An RLS policy that only allows UPDATE where user_id = auth.uid() — so nobody can edit someone else's profile by tweaking a request.

Setting it up

Add a profile page where logged-in users can update their name, avatar and bio, and make sure the database only lets them edit their own profile row.

  1. Ask Lovable to build the form and connect it to the profiles table.
  2. Confirm the RLS policy restricts updates to the owner's row — ask Lovable to show you the policy if you want to check.
  3. If avatars are involved, this needs file storage — ask Lovable to set up a storage bucket scoped so users can only upload/overwrite their own avatar file.

What usually goes wrong

  • No RLS restriction on UPDATE, so any authenticated user could technically edit any profile by ID.
  • Letting users edit fields that should be locked, such as role or email, through the same form — keep sensitive fields out of the editable payload.
  • Forgetting to validate input (e.g. bio length) both in the UI and, ideally, with a database constraint.

Editing roles is a separate, admin-only concern — see how-do-i-create-different-user-roles rather than exposing role fields on the self-service profile form.
