How detailed should a Lovable prompt be?
Last checked 31 Aug 2026
Short answer
Detailed about the outcome, brief about the implementation. Roughly a short paragraph plus a few bullets per request — long enough to remove ambiguity, short enough to stay about one thing.
The rule of one
One prompt, one outcome. A prompt covering three unrelated things gets three shallow results.
What detail helps
- The exact behaviour: what happens on click, on error, when the list is empty
- The content: real headings and copy where you have them
- The constraints: "do not change the header", "reuse the existing card component"
- The audience and tone
What detail wastes effort
- Telling it which file to create
- Naming CSS classes
- Prescribing libraries you have not verified
- Restating the design system on every prompt
Too short
Make a pricing page.
About right
Add a pricing page with three tiers (Starter $19, Growth $49, Scale $99), each listing five features, with Growth highlighted as most popular. Monthly/annual toggle, annual shows two months free. Reuse the existing button and card styles. Add an FAQ of four questions underneath.
Too long
Three screens of specification covering pricing, checkout, account creation and admin reporting in one message. Split it.
