How does Lovable work?

Last checked 31 Aug 2026

Short answer

You send a prompt, Lovable plans and writes real code files, runs the project, and shows you a live preview — repeating that loop for every change you ask for.

The build loop

  1. You prompt. You describe a page, a feature or a fix in plain language.
  2. Lovable reads the project. It looks at the files that already exist so new work matches what is there.
  3. It writes code. Components, routes, styles, database tables and server logic as required.
  4. It runs and checks. Build errors are caught and usually fixed before you see them.
  5. You review the preview. Then you prompt again.

Every change creates a version automatically, so you can revert if a step goes wrong.

The pieces you interact with

  • Chat — where you describe work and answer clarifying questions.
  • Preview — the running app, with a toolbar for selecting and annotating elements directly.
  • Code — the actual files, searchable and editable.
  • History — every version, with revert and bookmarking.

Build mode vs plan mode

In build mode Lovable implements changes end-to-end. In plan mode it discusses and plans first without touching your files — useful before a big or risky feature.

Where the backend comes from

Turning on Lovable Cloud gives the project a managed database, authentication, file storage and server functions, so features like logins and saved data work without you wiring up a separate service.
