How do I fix spacing problems in Lovable?

Last checked 31 Aug 2026

Short answer

Point Lovable at specific sections with exact spacing values (in Tailwind units or pixels) rather than saying "fix the spacing" — vague requests get vague, inconsistent results.

Why spacing gets messy

Lovable builds section by section over many prompts, and each prompt can introduce its own padding/margin choices. Without a stated scale, you end up with py-8 in one section and py-16 in the next, or cards with different internal padding.

Define a spacing scale once

Tailwind's default scale (4, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64px) is enough for almost any site. State it once:

Use a consistent spacing scale across the site: 16px for internal card/button padding, 32px between elements within a section, 80px between major sections on desktop and 48px on mobile.

Save this to Project knowledge so it applies to every new section Lovable builds, not just the one you're currently discussing.

Fix existing problems

  1. Open Preview and screenshot or note which sections feel cramped or too loose.
  2. Select the specific section in the preview toolbar rather than describing it by name.
  3. Give an exact instruction: "increase the padding above and below this section to 64px" rather than "add more space".
  4. Ask Lovable to check the whole page for spacing consistency once individual fixes are done — it can catch mismatches you missed.

Common causes

  • Mixing margin and padding for the same visual gap in different sections.
  • Nested containers each adding their own padding, doubling up the gap.
  • Copy-pasted sections from different prompts that were never reconciled.

What usually goes wrong

  • Asking Lovable to "add spacing everywhere" tends to add it unevenly. Be section-specific.
  • Fixing desktop spacing without checking mobile — the same padding can look fine on desktop and cramped or excessive on a phone; test both. See /questions/why-does-my-lovable-website-look-different-on-mobile.
