How do I reduce unnecessary database calls?

Last checked 31 Aug 2026

Short answer

Fetch only what a page needs, cache results, batch requests, and let Postgres do filtering instead of pulling whole tables into the client.

Why database calls add up

Every component that queries on mount, every useEffect with a missing dependency guard, and every list that re-fetches on each re-render adds a round trip to your Postgres database. In a Lovable Cloud (Supabase) project each of those round trips also counts against your Cloud usage.

Practical fixes

  • Filter and select in the query, not in JavaScript. Ask Lovable to add .select('id, name') instead of select('*'), and push where-style filters into the query rather than fetching everything and filtering client-side.
  • Cache reads. If you're using TanStack Query (common in Lovable projects), set a sensible staleTime so the same data isn't re-fetched every time a component mounts.
  • Batch related lookups. Instead of one query per row in a loop (an "N+1" pattern), join tables in a single query or use a Postgres function.
  • Debounce search inputs so a query doesn't fire on every keystroke.
  • Use Realtime sparingly. Subscribing to a whole table for a small live-update need is more expensive than subscribing to filtered changes.

A prompt that helps

Audit my dashboard queries and tell me which ones re-fetch on every render or pull more columns than the UI displays. Suggest fixes.

What usually goes wrong

Developers add a useEffect that depends on an object or array recreated on every render, so the query silently re-runs in a loop. Ask Lovable to check for unstable dependencies in effects that trigger data fetching. See /questions/how-do-i-find-unnecessary-react-renders for the render side of this problem.

When to get help

If query volume is genuinely driven by real usage rather than bugs, that's a scaling question, not a bug fix — see /questions/why-does-my-app-become-slow-with-more-users. For a deeper one-off audit, PromptSites.com can review your schema and query patterns.
