How do I prevent spam registrations?
Last checked 31 Aug 2026
Short answer
Verify email addresses on sign-up, add a CAPTCHA to the registration form, rate-limit sign-up attempts per IP, and check the token server-side before creating an account.
Where spam registrations come from
Usually scripted sign-ups, not real people — a bot submits the registration form repeatedly, either to spam other users, abuse a free tier, or test stolen credentials. Defences need to sit at the registration endpoint, not just the UI.
Practical measures
- Email verification — require a confirmed email before the account can do anything meaningful (Lovable Cloud's auth supports email confirmation).
- CAPTCHA on the sign-up form (e.g. Cloudflare Turnstile), verified server-side in the sign-up Edge Function or database trigger, not just displayed on the page.
- Rate limiting — cap sign-up attempts per IP per time window (see /questions/how-do-i-rate-limit-an-api).
- Disposable email blocking — reject sign-ups from known throwaway email domains if spam accounts are a recurring problem.
- Reject common bot patterns — very fast form completion times or filled honeypot fields are strong signals.
A prompt that helps
Add email verification and a rate limit of 3 sign-up attempts per IP per hour to the registration flow, and reject submissions where a hidden honeypot field is filled in.
What usually goes wrong
Email verification alone doesn't stop bots that use real, disposable addresses — pair it with rate limiting and a CAPTCHA rather than relying on verification as the only gate. Also confirm your RLS policies don't let an unverified account read or write data it shouldn't just because a row exists — see /questions/can-users-access-other-users-information. For a site with public sign-up expecting meaningful traffic, PromptSites.com can put a fuller anti-abuse stack in place.
