Should I use screenshots when prompting Lovable?

Last checked 31 Aug 2026

Short answer

Yes, for layout and visual matching — a screenshot removes ambiguity that words leave open, especially for spacing, alignment and component styling.

Screenshots remove guesswork words leave in

Describing a layout in text ("cards in a row with the image on top and a button at the bottom") leaves spacing, proportions and alignment to interpretation. A screenshot pins those down directly. Attach it with a specific instruction:

Match this screenshot's card layout for our product grid. Use our own product data and colours, not the ones shown.

When a screenshot helps most

  • Matching a specific existing screen (yours or a reference) exactly
  • Reporting a visual bug ("this is misaligned — see screenshot")
  • Showing spacing/sizing that's hard to describe precisely in words
  • Communicating a design you've been sent by a client or designer

When a screenshot isn't enough alone

  • It won't convey interactive behaviour (hover states, animations) — describe those in words alongside it.
  • It can't tell Lovable your actual content — pair it with real copy and data, not the screenshot's own text.
  • Low-resolution or cropped screenshots limit what detail Lovable can pick up — capture full elements, not partial crops, where possible.

What usually goes wrong

  • Screenshot given without instructions. An image on its own is a reference, not a command; say explicitly what to copy from it (layout only? colours too? exact spacing?).
  • Expecting Lovable to lift and reuse the exact assets in the screenshot (someone else's photos, logo, copy) — see /questions/how-do-i-get-lovable-to-copy-a-design-style-without-copying-the-website for the difference between style and content.
  • One screenshot for a multi-screen flow. If you're describing a whole user journey, either send a screenshot per screen or be clear the screenshot is only for one part of it.
