How do I make Lovable match a screenshot?
Last checked 31 Aug 2026
Short answer
Attach the screenshot, say precisely what to match (layout, spacing, colours, all of it), and iterate with follow-up prompts comparing Preview against the image side by side.
Set expectations for how close "matching" means
State the level of fidelity you want:
Attach this screenshot. Match the layout, spacing and typography exactly. Use our brand colours instead of the ones shown.
Without this, Lovable might match the general shape but not the precise spacing, or might copy colours you didn't want carried over.
Iterate in rounds, not one shot
Screenshot-matching rarely lands perfectly on the first try, especially for fine spacing or exact font sizing. After the first attempt:
- Open Preview next to the screenshot.
- Note specific differences ("the gap between cards is bigger in mine", "the heading is smaller than the screenshot").
- Send a follow-up prompt naming the specific difference, not "make it match better".
The card padding in my version is too tight compared to the screenshot — increase it to roughly match the screenshot's spacing.
Break a complex screen into parts
For a screen with several distinct zones (header, hero, card grid, footer), match one zone at a time rather than the whole screenshot in one prompt — it's easier to verify and correct a header than a full page in one pass.
What usually goes wrong
- Treating the first result as final. Screenshot matching is iterative; budget two or three follow-up prompts for a non-trivial screen.
- Vague follow-ups ("still doesn't match") that don't name what's different — be as specific about the gap as you were about the original request.
- Screenshot quality issues. A blurry, small, or heavily cropped screenshot limits precision; use the clearest, full version you have.
- Not separating "structure" from "content". If the screenshot has someone else's copy or images, say clearly that only the structure should be matched, not the words or pictures — see /questions/how-do-i-get-lovable-to-copy-a-design-style-without-copying-the-website.
Once matched, save the finished layout's key measurements or component structure to Project knowledge if you'll need the same pattern elsewhere in the app.
