How do I make Lovable ask me questions before building?

Last checked 31 Aug 2026

Short answer

Use Plan mode and explicitly ask Lovable to raise questions or ambiguities before building — it's designed to clarify requirements first rather than guess.

Plan mode is built to ask, not just answer

Switch to Plan mode and frame the request so Lovable knows clarification is welcome:

I want to add a booking system. Ask me any questions you need answered before proposing a plan — don't assume defaults.

Plan mode explores and discusses without writing code, which is exactly the space for back-and-forth before commitments are made.

Prompt for the specific gaps you know exist

If you know a request is underspecified, say so directly rather than hoping Lovable notices:

I haven't decided how time slots should be structured — ask me about that specifically before planning the booking feature.

In Chat/Build mode, Lovable may still ask mid-build

Build mode can pause and ask a clarifying question if it hits a genuine fork in the road (e.g. which payment provider, what happens on a duplicate email). Answer directly in chat to keep it moving — see the chat panel's documented behaviour for follow-ups and answering Lovable's questions.

What usually goes wrong

  • Building complex features directly in Build/Chat mode without a planning pass — Lovable will make a reasonable default choice rather than stopping to ask, and reasonable defaults aren't always what you wanted (e.g. picking a generic date format, or a default number of pricing tiers).
  • Answering vaguely when Lovable does ask. A clarifying question deserves a specific answer — "however you think is best" often just pushes the ambiguity back into the build.
  • Assuming one planning pass covers everything. For a large feature, expect a couple of rounds of questions and refinement in Plan mode before it's ready to build.

Pairing this with /questions/how-do-i-get-lovable-to-review-existing-code-before-making-changes gives Lovable both the existing context and the missing requirements before anything is built.
