Why isn't my custom domain connecting?

Last checked 31 Aug 2026

Short answer

Most failures come down to DNS records that don't exactly match what Lovable asked for, edits made in the wrong place, or not waiting long enough for DNS to propagate — check the records first, then give it time.

Checklist, in order

  1. Right place? Confirm you edited DNS where the domain's nameservers actually point — if you moved DNS to Cloudflare (or another provider), editing the original registrar's panel does nothing.
  2. Exact match? Compare every record (type, host, value) character-for-character against what Lovable's Domains panel currently shows — values can be project-specific and may change if you remove and re-add the domain.
  3. Conflicting records? Remove any old A/CNAME record for the same host that predates your Lovable setup.
  4. Proxy settings? If using Cloudflare, records must be DNS-only (grey cloud), not proxied.
  5. Time? DNS propagation can take minutes to 48 hours. Don't assume failure inside the first hour.

Check the DNS status for my connected domain and tell me what's missing or misconfigured.

Tools to check yourself

Use a DNS checker (search "DNS propagation checker") to see whether your records are visible publicly yet, and whether they match what you added — this rules out "it's just still propagating" versus "the record is wrong".

What usually goes wrong

  • Typos in the CNAME target or A record IP.
  • Domain registered but nameservers still pointing at a parking page provider, so DNS edits at the registrar have no effect.
  • SSL certificate not yet issued even though DNS looks correct — this can take a little longer after DNS verifies.
  • Confusing a 404/403 (domain connected but routing wrong) with "not connecting" at all — see why-does-my-domain-show-a-404-or-403-error if the domain resolves but shows an error.
