How do I test website speed?
Last checked 31 Aug 2026
Short answer
Run the published (not local) URL through a tool like Google PageSpeed Insights or WebPageTest, and check real load times on mobile data, not just your fast office wifi.
How to measure it properly
- Test the published URL, not the local Lovable preview — local preview speed doesn't reflect real hosting, CDN and network conditions.
- Run it through Google PageSpeed Insights or WebPageTest for objective metrics (Largest Contentful Paint, Time to Interactive, etc.) rather than a subjective "feels fast".
- Check on a throttled/mobile connection, not just fast wifi — most speed tools let you simulate this.
- Look at what's actually slow — usually large unoptimised images, unnecessary third-party scripts, or too much data fetched upfront.
Common fixes to ask Lovable for
This page is loading slowly — check for oversized images that need compressing, and see if we're fetching more data than the page actually needs on first load.
Other options:
- Lazy-load images below the fold.
- Defer or remove third-party scripts you don't actually need at launch.
- Paginate or limit large data queries instead of fetching everything at once.
What usually goes wrong
- Uploading large, uncompressed images straight from a phone or camera.
- Loading heavy analytics/chat-widget scripts that block rendering before the page is even usable.
- Testing only on a fast, wired connection and never simulating a realistic mobile network.
- Fetching an entire table's worth of data on page load "just in case", when the page only shows the first 20 rows.
